Series Of Unfortunate Events Movie ending?

I've watched the Series Of Unfortunate Events movie but the ending confuses me.

Whe they get the letter, is that when their parents left and wrote the letter that got lost in the mail?

Or did they send that because they're hiding and aren't really dead?

At first I thought it was the lost letter but the envelope had the spyglass in it.

So is it supposed to be one of those unanswered questions or what?

The kids thought that the parents had never sent the letter, but when they recieved it in the end, it had just been lost in the postal service, and had happened to finally arrive. It is no secret message. : )
