Try the website Meet In. They have both listings for free and pay events. I would also check out Craigslist under the Community section. There are always events/group that you can be part of. Unfortunately Boston is a VERY expensive city, but you can always get discounts to museums and such. Being outdoors is great in the summer but not so great in the winter. You can also check out the free Yahoo group listed below for events. Try ordering a cheap coffee at Starbucks and people watching in various parts of the city. Its one of the best entertaining ways to waste the day!
